Join us as we take a closer look at the Audi A6 e-tron, the electric estate proving you don't need an SUV for space, style, or range.

Overall Rating: 7/10

The Audi A6 e-tron Avant recently arrived at Carparison HQ, and it immediately caught our attention.

In a market saturated with electric SUVs, here's a sleek estate that doesn't apologise for what it is.

Built on Audi's Premium Platform Electric (PPE) architecture – the same clever foundations underpinning the Porsche Macan EV and Audi Q6 e-tron – the A6 e-tron Avant brings proper executive refinement to the electric estate segment.

Seriously sleek and aerodynamic, with a range pushing up to 444 miles (WLTP Comb), this is a car designed to make you reconsider everything an estate can be.

But does it live up to the hype?

We spent some time behind the wheel of the A6 Avant e-tron Performance to find out whether Audi's latest electric offering delivers on its promises – and whether it can tempt buyers away from rivals such as the BMW i5 Touring and Mercedes EQE Estate.

Unmistakably Audi: The A6 Avant e-tron

Sleek, stylish, and unmistakably Audi

The A6 Avant e-tron doesn't look like your typical estate car – and that's entirely the point.

An aerodynamic machine, every line has been sculpted to slip through the air with minimal resistance. It's one of the most wind-cheating estates you can buy, but unlike some EVs that wear their aerodynamics a bit too proudly, the A6 manages to look elegant rather than overdone.

The front end is unmistakably Audi. That wide Singleframe grille gives it a modern, premium presence without shouting about it. It's confident, not flashy.

Then there are those flush door handles. They look like normal handles, but don't pull out – there's simply a button behind the 'handle' that opens the door. It's a small detail, but it adds to that feeling of everything being carefully considered.

The classic Avant silhouette is there – long roofline, practical proportions – but it's been given a properly modern update.

And at the rear? Illuminated Audi rings light up the back end. It's subtle, but it still manages to catches your eye.

The whole package sits on 20-inch alloy wheels as standard (21-inch on higher trims), which fill the arches nicely without looking overstyled.

Audi A6 Avant e-tron boot and rear seats

Space galore thanks to the long roofline

That long roofline isn't just for show, either. The boot swallows 502 litres with all five seats up – not quite BMW i5 Touring territory, but still plenty for the weekly shop or a family getaway.

Fold the rear seats flat and you're looking at 1,422 litres of space. There's also a 27-litre frunk up front for charging cables and anything you'd rather keep separate.

Another bonus of the long roofline? Plenty of legroom throughout. And the middle rear seat even turns into cupholders.

It's an estate that knows exactly what it is – and wears it with confidence.

Tech in the Audi A6 Avant e-tron

Technology that enhances the drive

The A6 Avant e-tron is packed with tech, but here's the thing – most of it actually serves a purpose rather than just being there for show.

The head-up display

Let's start with the head-up display, because it's a bit of a double-edged sword.

At first, it's genuinely distracting. Information projected onto the windscreen right in your line of sight takes some getting used to, especially when you're trying to focus on the road.

But give it time, and it becomes genuinely useful. The current speed limit (and upcoming changes), navigation directions, what song's playing – it's all there without you needing to glance down at the dashboard.

The clever bit? It shows you where speed limits change on the road ahead and displays the new limit right as you reach it, which almost turns it into a game.

Dashboard lighting done right

The LED lighting around the dashboard isn't just for show. When you indicate, the lights subtly show which side you're signalling. It’s a nice visual confirmation that you've actually flicked the stalk.

Ambient lighting that actually does something useful? That’s properly refreshing.

Bang & Olufsen speakers

Bang & Olufsen sound system

Bang & Olufsen sound quality

The Bang & Olufsen sound system is excellent. It’s premium audio that makes even your guilty pleasure playlist sound brilliant.

Whether you're into podcasts, audiobooks, or just blasting your favourite tunes, the sound quality doesn't disappoint.

Passenger entertainment

There's a passenger screen built into the dashboard, which is a nice touch for longer journeys.

Your front-seat passenger can browse navigation, fiddle with entertainment options, or generally keep themselves occupied without constantly asking you to change settings.

Audi A6 Avant e-tron tech

Physical buttons in the Audi A6 Avant e-tron

The right balance

Here's what Audi has got spot-on: the balance between touchscreen controls and physical buttons.

Too many modern cars shove everything into a screen, making simple tasks (like turning on your hazards) unnecessarily complicated. The A6 strikes a good middle ground.

Important controls are physical buttons on the steering wheel, driver's door, and centre console, while the less frequently used stuff lives in the touchscreen.

It means you're not hunting through menus to adjust the temperature or change the radio station. Just reach out, press a button, and you're done.

The tech in the A6 Avant e-tron genuinely makes the driving experience better rather than just adding complexity for the sake of minimalism.

Behind the wheel: Smooth, powerful, and refined

Get behind the wheel of the A6 Avant e-tron, and it immediately feels like an Audi should – smooth, composed, and effortlessly capable.

Instant power, zero drama

With 380 PS on tap, the A6 delivers that characteristic EV punch. Press the accelerator, and it surges forward with impressive eagerness. The 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds tells you it's quick on paper, but experiencing it in person is something else entirely.

It's rapid when you want it to be, but never feels aggressive or unrefined. Just smooth, instant power that makes overtaking and motorway merging completely effortless.

A quirky safety feature

Here's something unexpected – the seat belts automatically tighten when you take off. It's a small detail, but it caught us off guard the first time.

Once you're used to it, it's actually quite reassuring, like the car's making sure you're properly secured before you go.

Surprisingly nimble

For a car of this size, the turning circle is genuinely impressive. Tight car parks and three-point turns are far less stressful than you'd expect from an executive estate.

The steering is light and easy, making urban driving and parking manoeuvres straightforward.

Road awareness

The A6 keeps an eye on speed limits for you, displaying changes on the head-up display as you reach them.

It's one of those features that sounds gimmicky but proves genuinely useful in practice, especially on unfamiliar roads where limits change frequently.

Ride quality up front

From the driver's seat, the ride is smooth and refined. The A6 soaks up bumps and imperfections with typical Audi composure, keeping things quiet and comfortable even at motorway speeds.

It's not a sports car, and it doesn't pretend to be. What it does brilliantly is cover ground quickly and comfortably, making longer journeys feel far less tiring than they should.

The A6 Avant e-tron Performance nails the executive car brief. It's fast when you need it to be, comfortable when you don't, and refined all the time.

Practical luxury for everyday life

The A6 Avant e-tron isn't just about looking good and going fast; it's packed with thoughtful touches that make daily driving genuinely pleasant.

Comfort sorted

Heated seats and a heated steering wheel come as standard. It's one of those features you don't realise you need until a cold January morning, and then you wonder how you ever lived without it.

There’s plenty of space and good legroom. Even taller drivers will find themselves comfortable on longer journeys, with ample foot space that doesn't feel cramped.

Charging on the go

There are two USB-C charging points in the front, so you can keep your devices topped up.

Boot space that delivers

The boot is properly generous. With 502 litres of space with the seats up, it'll swallow the weekly shop, sports kit, or luggage for a family holiday without breaking a sweat.

Need more room? Fold the rear seats down and you've got 1,422 litres to play with.

Plus, there's additional storage under the boot floor for keeping charging cables and other bits out of sight.

Dual charging ports

A genuinely helpful design idea: the A6 has charging ports on both sides of the car.

A true practical luxury, but we will get back into this later in the review.

Range and charging: Going the distance

This is where the A6 Avant e-tron Performance really shines.

Headline range

You get up to 437 miles on a full charge (WLTP Comb). That's genuinely impressive.

It's the kind of range that makes range anxiety feel like a relic from early EVs. Most drivers could easily go a week or more between charges, and longer motorway trips become far less stressful.

Rapid charging

When you do need to charge, the A6 supports up to 270kW DC fast charging. That means 10-80% in just 21 minutes at a compatible rapid charger.

Need a quick top-up? Ten minutes of charging can add around 183 miles of range (WLTP Comb). That's more than enough time to grab a coffee and stretch your legs.

Dual charging ports

Let’s get back to it; having charging ports on both sides of the car is a small detail that makes a big difference in real-world use. It means no more awkward manoeuvres trying to get the "right" side close to the charger.

The passenger side handles both AC and DC charging, while the driver's side is AC only – perfect for home charging or destination chargers.

Pros and cons of the Audi A6 Avant e-tron

What makes it stand out?

Here's where the A6 Avant e-tron makes its case: a properly premium electric estate that doesn't compromise.

The good bits:

Seriously impressive range: Up to 437 miles (WLTP Comb) means you're genuinely not thinking about charging very often.

Rapid charging that lives up to the name: 270kW DC charging gets you from 10-80% in 21 minutes. Ten minutes adds around 183 miles. That's properly quick.

Dual charging ports: Passenger side (AC and DC) and driver's side (AC only) mean you're never parked the wrong way at a charger. It’s simple but brilliant.

Smooth, powerful performance: 380 PS delivers effortless overtaking and motorway merging. 0-60 in 5.4 seconds feels quick without being aggressive.

Tech that actually works: The head-up display takes getting used to but becomes genuinely useful. Good balance between touchscreen and physical buttons means you're not hunting through menus for basic controls.

Thoughtful everyday features: Heated seats and steering wheel, generous boot space, USB-C charging points, and cup holders are all included.

Surprisingly nimble: Impressive turning circle for a car this size makes tight spaces far less stressful.

Looks fantastic: A sleek, aerodynamic design that doesn’t look like it's trying too hard. Those illuminated Audi rings at the rear are subtle but look proper premium.

Downsides?

Honestly? There aren't many major faults to pick at.

Rear ride quality isn't perfect: While the front is smooth and comfortable, rear passengers might feel bumps more than expected. If you're prone to travel sickness, the back seat might not be your favourite place on longer journeys.

That raised middle rear floor: It's odd for an EV. The middle rear seat floor rises slightly, which feels unnecessary given EVs typically have flat floors. Not a deal-breaker, but it's noticeable.

Head-up display learning curve: It's distracting at first. You'll get used to it and appreciate it eventually, but those first few drives take some adjustment.

Premium price tag: From £71,700, the A6 Avant e-tron Performance isn't cheap. But then again, you're getting a lot of car for that money, and the running costs will be significantly lower than an equivalent petrol or diesel executive estate.

These are minor niggles in the grand scheme of things, but still worth keeping in mind.

The verdict is in...

What’s the verdict on the Audi A6 e-tron?

Rating: 7/10

The Audi A6 Avant e-tron Performance makes a compelling case for the electric estate.

That 444-mile range (WLTP Comb) is genuinely impressive, and pair that up with 270kW rapid charging, range anxiety becomes a thing of the past. The driving experience is smooth and refined, the tech works brilliantly, and it looks fantastic.

Where it stumbles slightly is rear passenger comfort and that odd raised middle floor. The premium price tag (from £71,700) also means you're paying for that Audi badge.

It's exceptionally competent rather than genuinely exciting – brilliant at what it does, but doesn't quite blow you away. Hence the 7 out of 10.

Top 5 reasons to consider the Audi A6 Avant e-tron Performance:

  1. Impressive 444-mile range (WLTP Comb) eliminates range anxiety for good
  2. Rapid 270kW charging adds 183 miles (WLTP Comb) in just 10 minutes
  3. Dual charging ports on both sides make public charging effortless
  4. Sleek, aerodynamic design that stands out from the SUV crowd
  5. Refined, powerful performance with thoughtful everyday practicality

Would we recommend leasing an Audi A6 Avant e-tron?

Absolutely – especially for company car drivers and anyone after a premium electric estate with serious range.

The combination of low running costs, generous space, and that Audi refinement makes it a compelling package. It's not perfect, but it's very, very good at what it does. And anyway, what is truly perfect?

Does the Audi A6 Avant e-tron sound like your cup of tea?
